Kefalonia: Ambassador Cuculi Pays Tribute to the Fallen Soldiers of the Acqui Division

(ANSA) - ATENE, 14 SET - The Italian Ambassador to Greece, Paolo Cuculi, participated in the ceremonies commemorating the Kefalonia Massacre, perpetrated in September 1943 by units of the German army against Italian soldiers of the Acqui Division, who, following the armistice of September 8, 1943, refused to surrender their weapons and put up resistance against German troops. During the commemorations, the ambassador laid a laurel wreath at the Italian monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the Acqui Division and at the Greek monument to the National Resistance, as a testament to the deep historical and human bond that unites Italy and Greece. The ambassador then visited the “Fossa degli Italiani,” where he laid a bouquet of flowers in memory of the officers of the Acqui Division who were murdered there. The ambassador was then received aboard the Italian Navy patrol boat Paolo Thaon di Revel by Rear Admiral Andrea Bielli, commander of Operation EunavforMed- Irini, and by Commander Christian Pellitteri, commander of the ship, which was moored in Argostoli to take part in the commemorations. Numerous local officials took part in the events, including the vice presidents of the Ionian Region, Kouris and Papanastasatou, and the deputy mayor of Argostoli, Tsilimidos, as well as the military attaché, Col. Guarino and Honorary Consular Agent Graziella Micheletti, to whom the ambassador presented the honor of Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy, conferred upon her by the President of the Republic.
