Man stabs ex-wife and flees with son, captured after 7-hour hunt

(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 2 - A 47-year-old Roman man stabbed his ex-wife multiple times in the chest in front of their teenage son and then accompanied her to the hospital, before fleeing immediately to a seaside town near Rome, taking the boy with him, and was caught after a seven-hour manhunt on Tuesday night, police said Wednesday. Although the woman did not die, it is just the latest incidence of murderous violence against women in Italy, which is enduring a femicide crisis. Emergency room doctors raised the alarm, saying the four stabs the woman received were not fatal only by accident. Initial information gathered by investigators from the Flying Squad, and the Tuscolano Police Station revealed that the victim had shortly before gone to an apartment in Fontana Candida, in the southern part of the capital, where her ex-husband lived, to retrieve some personal belongings. Once inside, she was verbally assaulted by the man, who then grabbed a knife and stabbed her four times in the chest. Realizing he had seriously injured his ex-wife, the 47-year-old decided to drive her to the emergency room, taking along his teenage son, who had witnessed the attack. Once he had ensured she received first aid, he then fled in the same vehicle, accompanied by his son. According to an initial prognosis released by medical personnel, the blows to the victim were not fatal due to "fortuitous events." The woman, interviewed by investigators after regaining consciousness, reported the incident and recounted past abuse. According to his account, the violent incidents had also occurred in the presence of his minor children on other occasions. Police then began a search for the man, which lasted seven hours. To throw off the investigation, the forty-seven-year-old had tampered with the satellite device in his car, which was found shortly before midnight in Torvajanica, on the Roman coast. The raid began a few minutes later, when investigators spotted the silhouettes of his ex-husband and son walking back to the vehicle. Inside the car, on the back seat, they found a suitcase containing some clothing and a drawer containing some medications, likely collected by the suspect from his last home before fleeing. A blood-soaked knife was eventually found and seized in the Fontana Candida home, where the attack occurred. Late that night, the man was arrested for attempted femicide and taken to prison. The Velletri magistrates then validated the actions of the judicial police, ordering his pre-trial detention in prison. Italy is facing a fresh femicide wave with seven other women killed by their partners or exes since the mid-August Ferragosto holiday on August 15. These included a 72-year-old woman bludgeoned to death with a rock by her 74-year-old husband in a field near Cosenza in Calabria and a 50-year-old Polish woman stabbed to death by her 69-year-old Tunisian husband at Colleferro south of Rome. Previously, a 39-year-old woman was killed by her 43-year-old ex husband near Venice after having reported him to police several times for domestic violence, and after it emerged that he had been reported by three other women since 2002. Femicide has been classed as a national emergency in Italy with murderous violence against women hitting new heights. A specific new offence of femicide has been put onto the country's law books. A campaign of education for young males towards healthy relationships was partly stymied when the government made it conditional on parent approval to take part.in courses in Italy's schools, sparking protests from the opposition.
