2 schoolchildren injured in War Mamund blast

BAJAUR: Two schoolchildren were injured in an explosion in War Mamund tehsil here on Friday, police and residents said. They told Dawn that the incident occurred near a canal in the Damadola area in the morning after a device, allegedly planted by unknown people, went off with a bang. They said that two students of Government Primary School, Damadola No 2, who were on their way to school, were injured in the explosion, adding that nature of the bomb could not be ascertained immediately. Mansoor Khan, spokesperson for the Bajaur police, told this correspondent that both students — identified as Abuzar Khan, 10, and Jarah, 9 — were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Khar for treatment. He said that the condition of the students was said to be normal. The official, however, said that an investigation was under way to ascertain the nature of the blast. No one claimed responsibility for the explosion that drew widespread condemnation. Meanwhile, two minor girls were injured when unidentified assailants opened fire on them in Shinkai Alizo area of Khar tehsil on Thursday night. Police and residents said on Friday that the incident happened outside the residence of Bakhat Said. They added that the gunfire left Amina Bibi, 11, and 20-month-old Sadima Bibi injured. They told Dawn that the children, the daughters of Bakhat Said, were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital, Khar. Soon after the incident, residents of nearby homes rushed to the scene and launched a search for the attackers, who managed to flee the spot.
