Italy extends a helping hand to Venezuela with a medical facility in Maiquetía

(ANSA) - CARACAS, 13 LUG - Following the twin earthquakes that rendered the San José Hospital in Maiquetía, in the Venezuelan state of La Guaira, unusable, the Italian Civil Protection Agency, together with a team of doctors, surgeons, and medical specialists, set up a medical facility that treats hundreds of patients a day. This deployment was made possible by the arrival from Italy of three military flights loaded with humanitarian aid, the first of which arrived just two days after the earthquake, on June 26. During a ceremony held in front of the damaged hospital, the Italian Ambassador to Venezuela, Giovanni Umberto De Vito, formally handed over the facility to the Venezuelan Red Cross. The diplomat reaffirmed the commitment of the Italian government, which has approved a total fund of 8 million euros—3 million for the initial emergency response and 5 million for humanitarian assistance—channeled through the Red Cross, the World Food Program, and other long-standing civil organizations operating in the country. “We are here with teams of doctors and Italian Civil Protection personnel who are helping the Venezuelan people in the wake of two catastrophic events. I believe that the most important thing is human solidarity and helping our Venezuelan brothers and sisters get back on their feet,” De Vito stated. This institutional effort was complemented by a deeply human gesture: a flight by the Italian Air Force, coordinated by the government of Giorgia Meloni, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, which transported a group of Italian-Venezuelan doctors from the association “Venezuela – La Piccola Venezia.” This team operates a civilian medical facility at the San José clinic in Maiquetía and another in Caraballeda, managing to treat an average of between 190 and 210 patients per day.
