UN: Undersecretary Alessio Butti at the Global Dialogue on AI

(ANSA) - GINEVRA, 08 LUG - The Undersecretary for Innovation, Senator Alessio Butti, participated in the first edition of the United Nations Global Dialogue on the Governance of Artificial Intelligence, held in Geneva with the participation of Secretary-General António Guterres, presidents, ministers, and leaders from the tech sector and the scientific community. In this context of global digital diplomacy, which brought together 4,000 delegates, the undersecretary highlighted the need to identify guiding principles as soon as possible—principles that are shared and not dictated by a select few—to guide the deployment of AI, according to a press release from the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva. For Italy, governance means, first and foremost, putting people at the center: security, reliability, transparency of the underlying algorithms, and datasets that reflect the diversity of the world’s languages and cultures, not just a few. The rules that the international community must develop together—the Undersecretary emphasized—are not a brake on innovation but rather make it safer, faster, and more inclusive in its transformation process, praising the publication of the report by the United Nations Independent Scientific Panel —*Evidence-based assessment of opportunities, risks, and impacts of AI*—to which Prof. Silvio Savarese contributed. Italy already has a regulatory framework—that of the recent Law No. 123/2025—currently being implemented, aligned with the European Union’s AI Act, which prioritizes a “security-by-design” approach, and is ready to integrate this framework with principles and rules defined at the UN level. The Global Dialogue event also served as an opportunity to highlight the Italian government’s commitment to enabling infrastructure, with the aim of making it accessible to startups, SMEs, and universities to share the benefits of AI, as demonstrated by the Leonardo Supercomputer at the Bologna Technopole and the digital hub in Genoa, which has applied to host an EU Gigafactory. Thanks to the “AI Hub for Sustainable Development” initiative, these computing capabilities will also be accessible to partners and innovators in Africa.
