In Ukraine, Italy is investing in the future and in the health of mothers and children

(ANSA) - ROMA, 08 LUG - Every child born in Ukraine represents a promise for the future. Ensuring they receive quality care, from the very first days of life—even in the context of war—means contributing not only to saving lives but also to laying the foundations for the country’s recovery. This is the vision that inspires Italy’s commitment to supporting the Ukrainian healthcare system. At the international conference *“Neonatal Care in War-Torn Ukraine”*, organized by CUAMM – Doctors with Africa in Odessa, Italy reaffirmed that maternal and child health is a strategic priority in its cooperation with Ukraine. As Italy’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Carlo Formosa, noted, “Protecting a newborn during wartime means protecting Ukraine’s future.” Italian Cooperation supports an integrated approach that accompanies the country from emergency management through long-term reconstruction. These initiatives include strengthening hospital infrastructure, providing healthcare technologies, training medical staff through the exchange of scientific knowledge and up-to-date clinical experience, and enhancing local services and programs dedicated to mental health—all with the goal of making the healthcare system increasingly resilient, modern, and responsive to people’s needs. Investing in the health of mothers and children means investing in Ukraine’s human capital, in its resilience, and in the ability of future generations to lead its reconstruction. For this reason, Italy views health cooperation not only as a response to the consequences of the conflict but as an essential component of its support for the country’s European path and development.
