Humanitarian Corridors: 27 Refugees from Ethiopia Arrive in Italy

(ANSA) - NAIROBI, 03 LUG - The process that enabled 27 Somali and Sudanese refugees from Ethiopia to depart for Italy—carried out through the “humanitarian corridors” program—has been successfully completed. The initiative, the result of a memorandum of understanding between the Community of Sant’Egidio, the Ministries of the Interior and of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and the Italian Episcopal Conference, represents a significant example of institutional cooperation and international solidarity. The embassy, which has been collaborating with the Community of Sant’Egidio on this project for several years now, facilitated the necessary coordination between Italian and Ethiopian authorities and provided the essential support required to complete the consular and administrative procedures that made the beneficiaries’ departure possible. As emphasized by the Italian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Sem Fabrizi, “the embassy’s commitment confirms Italy’s determination to promote initiatives that combine the protection of human rights, the management of migration flows, and the protection of those fleeing situations of conflict and persecution.” In this context, the close collaboration established with Italian civil society and the Ethiopian authorities demonstrates that, with everyone’s commitment—by combining expertise and responsibility—it is possible to offer concrete solutions of high humanitarian value to those forced to leave their homes to escape war and violence. “My most sincere thanks go to the 27 beneficiaries of the project and to all those who made it possible,” the ambassador concluded.
