Prime suspect in 7-year-old Sargodha girl's murder case killed during CCD encounter, police say
SARGODHA: The Sargodha police on Wednesday said the prime suspect in a recent murder case of a seven-year-old girl was killed “by his accomplices’ firing” during an alleged encounter with the Crime Control Department (CCD) after he allegedly escaped police custody. The prime suspect was accused of trying to rape the girl before killing her, with her body being found in a shop on Monday, where the father said she had gone to buy some items. The suspect had been arrested along with at least three others, on whose behest the criminal acts were allegedly committed. On Wednesday, Sargodha Regional Police Officer (RPO) Shahzad Asif Khan told Dawn that the prime suspect accused of attempted rape and murder of the minor girl has been allegedly killed during an encounter with the CCD police early on Wednesday. A first information report (FIR) filed by a CCD station house officer (SHO) early on Wednesday said the prime suspect, who had reportedly escaped police custody on Tuesday, died due to firing by his “accomplices”. The details of how the prime suspect escaped from police custody and whether he was accompanied by anyone remain unclear, as the police appear unforthcoming in sharing their version. Sargodha District Police Officer (DPO) Sohaib Ashraf said that the three other suspects arrested in the murder case on Tuesday remain in custody. Wednesday’s FIR cited another FIR registered by the CCD on the escape of the prime suspect, which invoked several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), including those on attempted murder, assault to deter a public servant from duty and resistance to apprehension. The FIR recounting today’s CCD action invoked sections 302 (punishment of qatl-i-amd), 324 (attempt to commit qatl-i-amd), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in public functions) and 34 (acts done by several persons with common intention) of the PPC, along with provisions of the Punjab Arms Ordinance 1965. The FIR said a police team was on duty in Mitha Lak in the early hours of Wednesday when it received intel that the escaped prime suspect was standing on a road near Sem Nala with “three unknown persons”. Subsequently, a CCD team reached the location at around 2am and saw the prime suspect and others standing there, the complaint said. It claimed that the suspects opened fire at the police team “with the intent to kill” and fled towards nearby bushes. This prompted the CCD personnel to take “safe positions and shoot one or two aerial fires in response to the suspects’ shooting”, the FIR recalled. It added that the suspects then hid behind the bushes and opened “continuous fire” aimed at the police party, severely injuring Constable Muhammad in his left arm. “During this period, the suspects were asked loudly to stop firing and surrender, but the suspects continued their firing,” the FIR read, claiming that the shooting continued for 10 minutes. When the firing stopped, the CCD team searched for the suspects in the bushes using searchlights and found a “dead person who died by his accomplices’ firing”, the FIR claimed. It contended that the other three unidentified suspects had fled from the scene in the dark. The deceased person was identified by a head constable and a constable as the prime suspect wanted in the murder case, the FIR said. It claimed that an empty pistol was found lying next to the suspect’s body and Rs700 were found in the pocket of his shirt. The complaint said the suspect was taken to Faisal Masood Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem and the objects found in his possession were taken into police custody. The FIR accused the suspects of opening fire at the CCD team with the intention to kill and of “murdering their own accomplice”, contending they committed cognisable offences under the PPC. The CCD, established last year, has been criticised by human rights advocates and civil society members for alleged extrajudicial police encounters and a high number of casualties. In February, a fact-finding report by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) alleged that the CCD has adopted a “deliberate policy of staged police encounters leading to extrajudicial killings”. The HRCP said, based on press accounts, at least 670 CCD-led encounters were carried out across Punjab over eight months in 2025. More such deaths during encounters continue to be reported on a near-weekly basis.

Police launch high-level probe into horrific rape, murder of 3-year-old girl in Karachi's Quaidabad
KARACHI: A high-level team formed by Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Alam Odho has launched an investigation into the rape and murder of a three-year-old girl in Karachi’s Quaidabad, collecting DNA samples from over a dozen suspects from the same neighbourhood. The body of Kulsoom Mohammed Qasim, who had left her home to play outside in Muslimabad Colony on Tuesday afternoon, was found stuffed in a gunny bag at a main gate of the street leading to her home near Mustafa Masjid in Muslimabad later that evening. Doctors confirmed that she was subjected to “violent rape” before being murdered. Malir SSP (Investigation) Majida Perveen Halepota told Dawn on Thursday that the police had taken DNA samples from some suspects and were awaiting lab reports for possible matches. Another member of the investigation team told Dawn that a team of doctors, led by police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed, had taken DNA samples of 12 suspects from the same neighbourhood, some of whom were relatives of the victim. The officer said the samples had been sent to a lab at the University of Karachi (KU) and that the results were expected soon. The officer said that, based on reports provided by the Special Branch and local informants, investigators were focusing on three possible suspects who were said to be close relatives of the victim. The officer said they planned to detain these suspects for interrogation, but a breakthrough in the case would depend on any DNA match from the KU laboratory. The officer added that the investigation team was “certain” that the suspect(s) belonged to the same neighbourhood as the victim. A case has been registered by the Quaidabad police on the complaint of the girl’s father against unknown persons, under Sections 302 (premediated murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), 376 (punishment for rape), 377 (unnatural offences), 363 (kidnapping) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code. On Wednesday, Dr. Syed described the gruesome murder as “one of the most horrific cases” she had seen in her career. “All rape-murder cases of children are horrific, but some are more [terrible] than the others. This was one of them. Really disturbing,” she said. Meanwhile, IGP Odho formed a committee led by the deputy inspector general (DIG) of Karachi’s East Zone to conduct a transparent inquiry into the case. “People involved in this horrific incident do not deserve any leniency and they will be taken to task,” he said. Earlier this week, Sargodha police said they had arrested four suspects in the murder case of a seven-year-old girl, whose body was found in a shop. The prime suspect in the case was accused of trying to rape the girl before killing her. However, a day later, the main suspect in the case was killed in an alleged encounter with a Crime Control Department (CCD) team after he allegedly escaped from police custody.

Preliminary postmortem report of 7-year-old girl in Sargodha indicates possibility of rape: police
Sargodha police on Thursday received a preliminary postmortem report of the seven-year-old girl found murdered earlier this week, which indicated possible rape before her killing. The girl was found dead in a shop on Monday and four suspects were arrested, with one of them confessing to sexually assaulting and killing her during an interrogation. Sargodha District Police Officer (DPO) Sohaib Ashraf told Dawn that doctors who performed the postmortem said the preliminary report indicated possible rape. However, he added that doctors were awaiting a final and detailed autopsy report for confirmation. To a question, DPO Ashraf replied that the report pointed out multiple deep wounds on the girl’s head and neck, as if she had been hit hard with a blunt weapon during the incident. Quoting the report, the DPO said the cause of death was excessive bleeding due to wounds suffered from a sharp object. On Wednesday, Sargodha police said the prime suspect was killed “by his accomplices’ firing” during a reported encounter with the Crime Control Department (CCD), after he allegedly escaped police custody. A first information report filed by a CCD station house officer early on Wednesday said the prime suspect, reportedly, escaped police custody on Tuesday. The details of how the prime suspect escaped from police custody and whether he was accompanied by anyone remain unclear. The FIR The arrests in the case were reported a day after police in Sargodha registered an FIR on the complaint of the girl’s father. The FIR, a copy of which is available with Dawn, has been registered under Sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape or a minor), 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or for a shorter term) and 109 (punishment for abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence and where no express provision is made for its punishment) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The FIR quotes the complainant as saying that his daughter had gone to a kiryana store to buy some items, and that she often visited that shop. He told police he was worried when his daughter did not return and went to the shop along with some others. “When we asked the shop owner about my daughter, he did not answer,” the complainant said, adding that he and others accompanying him then went to the shop’s third floor, where they saw the prime suspect. “Upon seeing us, he threw away a knife he was holding and fled,” the complainant said. He added that he then went to his daughter, “who was breathing her last”. The complainant accused the prime suspect of murdering her daughter after attempting to rape her. He further alleged that the crime was committed at the behest of the shop owner and two other suspects, adding that he had an argument with the shop owner two days before the incident. The complainant alleged the shop owner had threatened him and said he would teach him a lesson for life.

Minor girl’s rape, murder: Police trying to save ‘other culprits’: victim’s family
SARGODHA: An uncle of the minor girl, who was raped and murdered in Sargodha on June 23, as well as the family of suspect Arsalan, who was killed during an encounter, have separately alleged that the police have let some other suspects, including the owner of the shop where the crime was committed, off the hook during investigation. Sargodha city police had registered a case on the complaint of victim’s father Naeem who stated in the FIR that when his daughter, Mantaha Zahara (8), did not return home from the market, he and some others started searching her. During the search, they also went to the nearby grocery store, owned by one Hanif. On being asked about the girl, the shop owner reluctantly revealed that Arsalan, a helper at the shop, had taken her to the upper floor, where the victim was later found raped and murdered. The victim’s father had initially nominated four suspects – Arsalan, Abbas, Hanif and his son Ehsan Ali. Later, Arsalan was allegedly killed by his associates during an “encounter” with a CCD team. However, Shahid, a paternal uncle of the victim, expressed his dissatisfaction over the police investigation, alleging they were favouring the shopkeeper and his son and also omitted the name of a fifth “culprit” from the FIR. A CCD official, seeking anonymity, told Dawn that initially the police registered FIR No 103 of the rape and murder incident on June 26, and later another FIR No 104 was registered. He says that FIR 104 states that the earlier FIR was about the escape of Arsalan from the CCD custody. He said now the police high-ups were handling the case investigation. Meanwhile, Arsalan’s parents have also alleged that their son was made a scapegoat, whereas the police are saving the “real culprits” because they were influential. The DPO and SP investigation were not available for their comments as they were busy in Muharram security arrangements. raped: Sargodha police have registered a case against a youth for alleged sexual abused and rape of two children and recording video of the heinous crime. According to police sources, in Jholpur Bangla village of Mela town, Sargodha, a youth ‘M’ lured a 10-year-old boy and another 12-year-old boy to a deserted compound. As the suspect was allegedly subjecting both boys to sexual abuse and rape, besides recording the episode, a child’s uncle, Abid Hussain, arrived at the scene. On seeing Abid, the suspect left the children and escaped. The Mela police registered a case. Published in Dawn, June 26th, 2026
